As I approach my 30’s, it has been extremely important for me to not only take care of my body, but also my skin. For the last year or so, I’ve become more and more aware of the products that I use on an everyday basis ––skincare being at the top of the list. I mostly look for products that are paraben-free, organic, cruelty-free and fall under this rule of thumb: the least amount of ingredients, the better. To help with this, I enlist the help of my handy dandy Think Dirty app while shopping for essentials, to make sure everything checks off.
At the top of the list in my skincare routine is sunscreen. Sunscreen isn’t what it used to be. It’s nothing like that smelly, color-changing Coppertone Kids Colorblock from the 90’s. I’ll save you the speech my mom used to give me on sun protection, but I will emphasize how important sunscreen is (along with water) to keep your skin looking young, healthy and free of common skin cancers, like melanoma.
Here’s a common misconception. Sunscreen is only for days when we’re planning on laying poolside. Wrong.
- Sunscreen should be implemented into your daily routine
- There are an array of products besides traditional sunscreen
The following is a roundup of 10 sunscreen products you never knew you needed, just in time for Skin Cancer Awareness Month:
For Your Hair & Scalp
Our hair and scalp are exposed to the sun on a daily basis. These products from Bare Republic not only shield our golden locks from harmful UV rays, but they also work as a heat protectant to protect your hair from scorching temperatures and the damaging, drying and color-fading effects caused by heat styling.
There’s a variety of suncare products that are made specifically for our face. If you’re an avid runner or prefer to exercise outdoors, Coola makes a great sport sunscreen for the face with moisturizer. For those of us that would rather skip the application of thick sunscreen, there are great options like Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder which goes on top of your makeup, reduces shine, and diminishes the appearance of pores by creating an “insta” filter with a soft focus matte finish. Another great option is Coola’s makeup setting spray with SPF –its 70%+ certified-organic formula includes both cucumber and aloe vera extracts to help soothe and refresh skin, while hyaluronic acid, tones and rehydrates. If you’re like me and swear by anti-aging products, you have to give Supergoop! Anti-aging City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30, a try. The lightweight formula is both a moisturizer and a broad-spectrum SPF 30, which helps fight the signs of premature aging and protects against future UV damage. Built for year-round use, it’s a great primer for the rest of your daily beauty regimen!
More than 60 percent of regular sunscreen users skip their lips. But faithfully applying SPF products on your lips increases your chances of keeping your pout cancer-free. Both Coola and Supergoop! make some great options. Smear a little on your cheeks for an added touch of color this summer.
Have you ever heard someone say that you can always tell a person’s age by looking at their hands? They’re not kidding. Our hands are a dead giveaway of our age. From wrinkles, to freckles and sun spots, premature aging is most noticeable in our trusty hands. This is completely preventable –next time you’re stuck in traffic, the sun beaming with your hands on the steering wheel, don’t forget to apply a good hand cream with SPF. Your future self will thank you!
